History of Covenant Presbytery
Covenant Presbytery was organized on June 18, 1973 as a presbytery of the Continuing Presbyterian Church at a meeting held at First Presbyterian Church of Indianola, Mississippi. Teaching Elder John W. Stodghill, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Indianola, MS was elected as our first moderator, and Teaching Elder Robert L. Mabson of Eastland Presbyterian Church in Memphis, TN was elected as our first stated clerk. The name Covenant was chosen as our name over other suggestions such as: Stalwart, John Calvin, Reformation, Mississippi Valley, and Pioneer.
Covenant Presbytery was one of the earliest (7th) presbyteries of the newly formed National Presbyterian Church denomination, renamed one year later as the Presbyterian Church in America. It is now one of the largest presbyteries in our denomination with over 50 churches and church plants and over 105 ministers, campus ministers, and missionaries as members.
Covenant Presbytery meets at least 3 times each year, hosted by one of our churches, on the first Tuesday of February and October and on the third Tuesday of May.
